Have you ever used Google Map’s street view? It allows you to view the actual street as if you were traveling by foot or car on the road. Recently the technology was instrumental in finding a missing child according to this blog Google Street View helps find kidnapped Mass. child. By using a combination of cell phone GPS coordinates and Google Maps, Police were able to identify the location of a kidnapped 9-year-old.
The entire story can be read at Athol woman and granddaughter found in Virginia
Using technology more commonly seen in television crime dramas, an Athol police officer and a deputy chief in the town’s Fire Department were able to track a woman and her allegedly kidnapped 9-year-old granddaughter to a motel in south-central Virginia.
They notified Virginia State Police, who yesterday arrested Rose M. Maltais of 14 Grove St. without incident around 4:15 p.m.
However, parents should be aware the same technology can be used by those with less pure motives. Pedophiles and sex offenders trolling the web searching for victims can also use information garnered from children and street views to target their prey.
That is why it is critical parents continue to monitor their child’s Internet and cell phone usage to ensure they aren’t providing seemingly innocent information potentially placing them at risk.
