Yesterday the major headlines in Florida concerned the potential execution of Mark Schwab. Earlier this year, concern was voiced whether the death penalties would be applicable or upheld in the cases of John Couey convicted of raping and murdering Jessica Lunsford and Howard Steven Ault, convicted of murdering two sisters.
Florida Supreme Court appeal
Howard Steven Ault was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of two young sisters, eleven-year-old Deanne Mu’min and seven-year-old Alicia Jones. Ault was also charged with two counts of sexual battery on a child under twelve years old, two counts of kidnaping a child under thirteen years old, and two counts of aggravated child abuse
In both cases the death penalties were upheld.
In North Carolina a mother had to continue her pursuit of justice.
CHARLOTTE – The mother of a murdered 10-year-old is fighting to keep her daughter’s killer behind bars.
Amanda Marie Ray was kidnapped, beaten, sexually assaulted and killed nearly 30 years ago. Her killer, Fred Coffey Jr., was sentenced to death twice, but his sentence was later reduced to life in prison.
In their attempt to lobby for stricter sex offender laws in North Carolina, the following was sent to me via an email.
The following situation is one of many that have occurred. We of Jessica’s Law Now North Carolina are fighting help make the difference.
As the saying goes, “if you can’t do the time then do not do the crime.” This is how this mother feels, about what had occurred with my child being assaulted by a sex offender. I feel that North Carolina Laws are still not strict enough, when it comes to sex offenders. Even thought the sex offender had a tracking device, it was not enough to stop him. The tracking device only was a record of his where- abouts. If the device would have made it clear to authorities that he was in area, that he was not allowed to be in, then my child would not have endure the reoccurring nightmares of the assault. This is why, I have joined in with Jessica’s Law Now North Carolina, to make a difference in our state laws. So other children will not be robbed of their innocence and find themselves at the hands and mercy of a monster.
