Another False Amber Alert
September 3, 2007 by MCA
Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest highway travel days of the year often placing a tremendous burden on law enforcement. So what would possess someone to file a false Amber Alert?
In North Carolina this woman, allegedly had no issues telling police her child was abducted. “Kings Mountain Woman Lies About Kidnapped Child“.
AMBER stands for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. The acronym was derived in honor of Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped and killed in 1996. The third-grader was dragged, screaming, off her bicycle as she rode near her grandparents’ home in Arlington, Texas. Her body was found four days later in a creek. As a result of her death, Dallas broadcasters developed a local alert program, the first of its kind and modeled after storm warning alerts.
The system is intended to safe children’s lives not to recover stolen vehicles.
According to this NCMEC publication , ”State Penalties for False Reporting of a Crime” the penalty in North Carolina is no less than 30 days, nor more than 6 months’ imprisonment.
Should the penalties be harsher? A warrant for Jeanette Michelle Goforth for filing a false police report has been issued.
Is the amber alert email for an alleged Evan Trembley false or not?
Thanks
Becky,
If this is the Evan Trembley, it is FALSE according to Snopes.com which tracks hoaxes. There is an explanation as to why they believe it is.
