After two years of lobbying by John Walsh for what he deemed more effective child protection legislation, President Bush signed the “Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Protection Act of 2006″.

” House Judiciary Committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R- Wis.), the sponsor of H.R. 4472, released the following statement:

Chairman Sensenbrenner said, “This legislation makes one thing clear to sex offenders across this country — you better register, and you better keep your information current, or you are going to jail….

Evidently, somebody forgot to tell the State Attorney Generals and Legislators. The hoopla surrounding the signing of the bill last July probably had parents sleeping better at night. However, the nightmare of the recent abduction, molestation and murder of Christopher Barrios will keep many awake while it turns out most of those sleeping are State Attorney Generals; at least according to this  Delaware Online article.

Attorney General Beau Biden called today for quick passage of a bill to bring Delaware law regarding sex offenders into compliance with the federal Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.Biden said his understanding was that Mississippi was the only state to have fully complied with the federal legislation. He said the federal law holds out $57 million to help states track convicted sex offenders, and that extra money is available to states that move most quickly to qualify for it.It’s my goal that Delaware will be the second in the nation,” Biden said.
